The Unintended Effects of Driverless Cars
This was good; so-so Hacker News discussion.
A couple of thoughts:
- The current commuter rings of major metro areas will double in size as people will trade longer but 100% productive commutes for cheaper real estate.
- An increased need for parking in major cities. I like the idea of sending the car home, but there is a certain practicality in having your car readily available nearby. Maybe parking garages/lots will reside on the outskirts, a la airports, and will connect to the city centers via high-speed public transport.
